Two Ways a Woman can get Hurt

Advertisement has such a way of twisting people's thoughts and feelings. In the essay, "Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt" by Jean Kilbourne, example after example are shown how advertisement has twisted peoples thoughts and feelings. One of the ads that Kilbourne talks about is the "No" add. People say No is No, but when its advertised that no really means yes, some people will justify reason. No one can fully understand what its like to say no to someone and have them treat you like your saying yes, until you have experienced it yourself. Many claim that we should have better common sense than to act in such a way and I agree, but not all people are going to act with common sense. The way that ads portray woman as weak and inferior makes me sick. Unfortunately many young ladies mimic that style and trend and concequently become victims themselves. The thing that people fail to understand is that a person can present themselves in an orderly manner and still be a victim of something they did not bring upon themselves. Advertisement isn't the only reason from abuse but it is a factor and as long as we play into it, the more our world is going to struggle. Sometimes its easier to problems on advertisement. Sure there are others that contribute to the problems of the workd but going after one thing at a time is the best way to over come the corrupt image of woman and men, and what better place to start than with the media.

Grammer Post #3

Affect and effect. What's the difference between the two words. There are so many times that I will be sitting at a computer writing a paper and I will come to a road block not knowing if I should use affect or effect. So, tonight I decided I needed to learn how to use these two confussing words.
The website that I went to explained that affect is a verb and effect is a noun. The website also said, "When you affect something, you produce an effect on it. Even in the passive voice, something would be affected, not effected." So now I know that the action of something is the word affect and the outcome of the action is the effect.

Framing Class, Vicarious Living, and Conspicuous consumption

I really enjoyed reading this essay by Diana Kendall. The attention grabber of "The Simple Life 2" was perfect to grab the reader and the use of other tv shows helped tp keep the reader interested. I belive its so true that the media likes to control everyo0ne else's view of society. People try so hard to become the "upper class" by spend money they don't have on iteams they really don't need, thus, puting the america people more and more into debt.

From Seven Floors Up

I've always had a hard time interperating poems, but something that really impacted me from Sharon Olds poem was the line "Suddenly I see that I have thought that it could not happen to me, homelessness." Many people don't ever think that something bad is going to happen to them, but life can throw a curve ball. I think the thing to learn is that to never take life for granted.

Money

So, the first time I read the poem by Dana Gioia, I didn't really like it. But after reading the poem a few times, I realized that I actually really like it. Naming all the different names of money made me really think about the different words that are used to express ones self.

Who vs Whom.
I've never known how to use Whom vs who, but I found a website that showed me an easy to remember how to use the two words.

Rule.
Use the he/him method to decide which word is correct. he = who him = whom

Examples:
Who/Whom wrote the letter? He wrote the letter. Therefore, who is correct.
For who/whom should I vote?Should I vote for him? Therefore, whom is correct.

Now I know that I can try he or hime to see which word to use.

Against School

I found Gatto's essay Against School very interesting. I had a hard time agreeing with his argument. over the weekend I read 1984 by George Orwell. Thanks for the suggestion Chelsi. I thought it was interesting how Gatto's impression of the school much like that of the totalitarianism Party in 1984. The party doesn't want people to think for themselves, thus they control thoughts, actions and even language to control and gain power over the people. Gatto even mentions 2 main groups in the school. The minority who get a liberal education or a higher, better, education, and the the larger class to forgo the privileges of a liberal education. In 1984 there is the same idea. The educated and leaders called the inner party have privileges whereas the outer party and the proles have all the manual labor and are taught to conform and not think for themselves. I really don't think that our schools have gone to that extreme as is found in 1984, but I do believe that as parents we need to be more involved and teach our children to think critically and independently and learn all aspects of education like philosophy, art music, and history. Teacher and parents alike have the responsibility to educate children as much as possible so they can grow and lead in the future.

Idiot Nation

When I first started to read Idiot Nation by Michael Moore I was a little weary. I have heard of some of the things he has done and I was not impressed, but as I was reading Idiot Nation I pleasantly surprised at what he had to say about the education system. Since I was little I have wanted to be a teacher, and it always bothered me how the first place the government went for budget cuts was the schools. I have always thought it was stupid that we as a country want our children to be well rounded and ready to lead and yet we don’t want to give the necessary funds to help teach our children. The politicians want to blame the failure of education on bad teachers and teachers who are doing the best they can with what they’ve been given! I love what Moore says about that situation. He said,
“Sure, there are a lot of teachers who suck, and they’d be better suited to making telemarketing calls for Amway. But the vast majority are dedicated educators who have chosen a profession that pays them less than what some of their students earn selling Ecstasy, and for that sacrifice we seek to punish them. I don’t know about you, but I want the people who have the direct attention of my child more hours a day than I do treated with tender loving care. Those are my kids they’re “preparing” for this world, so why on earth would I want to piss them off?” (Moore 139)
More then goes on to thank teachers for their dedication and how they are the most important person in his life because the teachers are the ones molding his kids future. I completely agree with Moore’s points of view and I really wish that children will have a better opportunity and a better learning atmosphere so that they can be tomorrow’s leaders!

The grammar rule I am focusing on this week is commas. I used to be really bad at placing commas. I would put them where ever it looked good. I have learned the main rules of placing commas this past year, but sometimes I still struggle to know if I am doing it right. I want to become more confident in using commas, and I don’t want to always worry if I am doing it right.
The rules for commas are:
Place a comma after an introductory or transitional word.
Place a comma after an introductory clause.
Place a comma after a dependent clause.
Place a comma before a coordinate conjunction in a compound sentence.
Place a comma to set off an appositive, an explanatory phrase after a noun.
Place a comma before and after a parenthetical expression.
I found these rules from
www.depts.dyc.edu I like this website because not only does it explain the rules for many grammar problems but it also gives examples. Once the person has read through the rules and examples, the website has exercises the person can do to test what they have learned.
