The grammar rule I am focusing on this week is commas. I used to be really bad at placing commas. I would put them where ever it looked good. I have learned the main rules of placing commas this past year, but sometimes I still struggle to know if I am doing it right. I want to become more confident in using commas, and I don’t want to always worry if I am doing it right.
The rules for commas are:
Place a comma after an introductory or transitional word.
Place a comma after an introductory clause.
Place a comma after a dependent clause.
Place a comma before a coordinate conjunction in a compound sentence.
Place a comma to set off an appositive, an explanatory phrase after a noun.
Place a comma before and after a parenthetical expression.
I found these rules from www.depts.dyc.edu I like this website because not only does it explain the rules for many grammar problems but it also gives examples. Once the person has read through the rules and examples, the website has exercises the person can do to test what they have learned.
